After being awarded the job, we immediately began creating an animatic. The goal was to perfect the match cuts, camera movements, and location ideas. After several rounds of feedback, we landed on a version that we were all thrilled with. Once approved, we shifted into scout mode.

Our primary focus was on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, specifically around Marquette. During my initial online research, I struggled to find locations that were both unique and production-friendly. The spots I liked were either too remote or required difficult hikes, making them nearly impossible for a full crew to access.

For our in-person scout, my Line Producer hired a local guide, who was an invaluable resource. Not only did he show us the places we requested, but he also introduced us to several hidden gems we hadn’t considered. One of these, thankfully, turned out to be the perfect spot for our shoot.

Our shoot days were aggressive. We basically shot the same commercial twice because we needed to showcase both gmc trucks for services needed — from the wide shots, to both wheel wells to under the body.

In post-production, we experimented with different transition styles. In the end, the simplest approach proved to be the most effective. The fast pace edit required less, which the examples below complicated the rhythm.

Overall, this project was a grind, but was also an absolute blast to work on. The creative collaboration, challenges, and solutions along the way made the experience unforgettable. and like any project, it comes down to the people you work with that makes it so enjoyable.
